Aiming for a perfect end to the season

Villarreal will be looking for a win against Atletico to end the season at the Estadio de la Ceramica (Sunday, 6.30pm CEST)

Villarreal will close the 2022/23 season against Atlético de Madrid this Sunday, with kick-off at 6.30pm CEST, at the Estadio de la Cerámica. The Yellows, who have already qualified for the Europa League and confirmed fifth place, will fight to give their fans one last victory to bid farewell to an impressive season for the Yellow Submarine.

Quique Setién’s side host Los Colchoneros after a painful 2-1 defeat to Rayo Vallecano in their last game, which saw them miss out on Champions League football. However, this is far from tarnishing the team’s immaculate month of May: Villarreal are the most in-form side in the competition with nine points from a possible twelve.

Moreover, with three games remaining in the competition, the Yellows have again qualified for the UEFA Europa League – their 19th appearance in European competition in the club’s 23 years in the top flight – and doing so with one of their best records in LaLiga.

Atlético de Madrid are in third place on 76 points and their only objective this Sunday is to catch Real Madrid in second place. To do so, Cholo Simeone’s side must beat Quique Setién’s side and hope for defeat for Madrid, who face Athletic Club at the Santiago Bernabéu.

The first leg match against Atlético de Madrid was one of the Submarine’s best performances in LaLiga. Villarreal earned a creditable 2-0 win at the Cívitas Metropolitano thanks to goals from Yeremy Pino and Gerard Moreno. The match will be refereed by De Burgos Bengoechea, assisted by Figueroa Vázquez on VAR.
