Marcelino underlined that the team must improve their performance in defence
Villarreal head coach Marcelino García Toral appeared before the media to analyse the defeat in the regional derby against Valencia CF (3-1). “Valencia outplayed us. They were better than us, especially in the first half hour. They had more precision and more discipline. We knew the intensity with which they start their games, but despite that we couldn’t counter them. The victory is fair and it’s time to congratulate them.”
The coach was critical of his side’s defensive performance : “We need to improve a lot. We have conceded 38 goals in 19 games. It’s a very serious problem. In the last five games, we’ve conceded 14 goals. The opponents don’t need much to score against us. We have to work hard to improve this facet, which is so important in the game.”
Similarly, Marcelino stressed that now is the time to act and reverse this dynamic: “We have to compete. We are reiterating this message, but we have to act now and stop conceding. We have to work harder. We are already doing it, but we are not succeeding and we have to work harder if possible. There is no other way but to keep working.”
