A deserved win against Sevilla sees Villarreal Women leave the relegation zone and dream of staying up

Villarreal Women got three important points in their match against Sevilla on Wednesday afternoon at the Estadio Jesús Navas. Sara Monforte’s team were facing the Andalusian side after a busy week where they sealed their place in the Copa de la Reina Round of 16, and, despite the defeat, went head-to-head with Real Sociedad. This time out, goals from Tere Morató and Sheila Guijarro have the Yellows a deserved victory.

Given the importance of the match, the Yellows gave their all from the opening minute. Morató nearly put them ahead when, after a good cross from Pancha Lara, she shot with her right foot, but was off target. Villarreal Women continued trying, and thanks to their good play and dominance of the ball, were in charge of the early moments of the game.

In the 37th minute, Estefa Lima nearly scored the goal of the week. A cross into the heart of the box found the attacker, who connected with an overhead kick, but the ball went just wide of Esther Sullastres’ goal. With Villarreal Women on top, we went into half-time with a goalless draw.

The second half started perfectly for the Yellows. In the 54th minute, Morató put them in front. The Andorran won a free-kick which was taken by Pancha Lara to the back post, with Lara Mata heading it on for Morató to head into the back of the net. Villarreal Women were ahead.

The game was hectic, and not long after the Yellows’ goal, Sevilla had a chance to levle the match from the penalty spot, but Araya’s effort hit the bar. Monforte’s side continued to push forward to get the second goal to try and seal the three points. That came in the 63rd minute when set-piece specialists Pancha Lara played a corner to the near post for Sheila to fire home. The striker now has six goals this season.

Morató sealed the win for Villarreal with her second in the 66th minute. Once more it was a set piece taken by the Chilean left-back which found Tere in the middle of the box to kill the game.

Once more the team showed they do not give up. Villarreal Women, thanks to goals from Sheila and Tere, got a deserved win over Sevilla and moved out of the relegation zone. Next up is a match against Rayo Vallecano (Sunday, 12pm CET) on Pitch 9 at the Training Ground. The match will be shown on Villarreal TV
