Sara Monforte’s side secured a hard-fought win against Madrid CFF thanks to Sheila and Belén

Villarreal Women arrived in the Spanish capital to go up against the second-placed team in the Finetwork Liga F, Madrid CFF, a team who were yet to lose at home this season, with two consecutive clean sheets at the Estadio Fernando Torres. Sara Monforte’s side fought until the end to take the win thanks to goals from Sheila Guijarro and Belén Martínez.

Both teams were intense from the opening whistle, with heavy disputes and looking dangerous from set pieces.. The first team to land a blow was Madrid CFF. From a rebound following a corner kick, Aldana Cometti flicked the ball into the back of the net in the 12th minute. However, Monforte’s team did not give up and continued to fight, until, just five minutes later, they were rewarded for their efforts. In an almost identical move, Sheila took advantage of a corner kick and headed the ball into the back of the net to level the score. The striker threatened again in the closing stages, but her effort was off target. The game went into the break with the score level (1-1).

At the start of the second half, the home side looked strong, creating a couple of dangerous chances. However, they were cancelled out by an impressive Villarreal defence and Elena de Toro in goal. It was the 52nd minute when, after a defensive error, Ainoa Campo’s cross fell to Belén, who took advantage to put the Yellows ahead. In addition, the changes in the Villarreal Women team brought more freshness and intensity to the team, allowing them to get a hard-fought victory against a very difficult opponent.

Next up for Villarreal Women is their opening match in the Copa de la Reina, which will take place on Tuesday 22nd November, at 5pm CET, against RCD Espanyol at the Dani Jarque Training Ground.
