Unai Emery underlined the respect his team has for the Copa del Rey, and how his side took the tie seriously
Villarreal CF head coach Unai Emery appeared in front of the media to analyse the win in Round Two of the Copa del Rey against Atlético Sanluqueño (1-7).
The Basque head coach praised his side’s performance on Andalusian soil: “We wanted to win. We were coming up against a professional side and we didn’t want to speculate. The team responded well. We analysed them well. We wanted to frustate them, have control of the game and attack the opposition goal. We were consistent throughout and I’m very pleased.”
After sealing the win which sees the Yellows into the next round of the cup, Emery highlighted that it’s an exciting competition for the Submarine: “We want to have a good journey in the Copa del Rey. We need to be convincing and continue moving through the rounds. It’s a very attractive competition, where there are a lot of surprises. We are a team that has aspirations and we want to compete against the big candidates.”
To conclude, the Basque head coach looked at the hard demands of taking part in three competitions, and the importance of a deep squad: “We’re playing in three competitions. Each one of them is distinct and we are on different paths. We have a lot of respect for this competition and the opponents we have faced and are going to face. Today, some of the players who aren’t featuring as much took centre stage, and they put in good performances.”
