Villarreal B overcome CD Lugo with goals from Fer Niño, Sergio Lozano and Diego Collado

The Mini Submarine beat CD Lugo 3-1 thanks to goals from Fer Niño, Sergio Lozano and Diego Collado. The game started with chances for both sides and it wasn’t until Villarreal made it 1-0 that they took control of the match. From then on, Miguel Álvarez’s side impressed, and made it 3-0. In the 78th minute Chris Ramos pulled one back and brought the away side closer, but his sending off shortly afterwards left the Galicians with no chance.

The first half started as expected. Villarreal tried to follow their plan and dominate the game through possession, but CD Lugo were not going to make it easy and tried to be the first team to get on the scoresheet with a low cross that Ramos sent wide. The Galician side made their first change in the opening ten minutes due to Bruno Pirri picking up a knock. Despite this, Hernán Pérez’s side did not change their approach and tried to take the lead through crosses from out wide. Villarreal went from strength to strength and in the 36th minute they took the lead thanks to a very good combination between Lozano and Collado that left Fer Niño alone in front of the goalkeeper, firing past him.

Miguel Álvarez’s side were not satisfied and went for more, Collado first and then Fer Niño could have increased the home team’s lead, but Lugo could also have got on the scoreboard with a goal that was disallowed by VAR for offside. The scoreboard did not move and the teams went to the break 1-0.

The second half started with changes in CD Lugo’s ranks, who tried to move the pieces to level the score. Despite this, the Mini Submarine gave no respite and in the 52nd minute Lozano put a ball behind the back of the Galician defence finding Collado in space on the edge edge of the area. He stopped, played a one-two with the Yellows No.21 and, subsequently, he left it on a plate to Niño, who was knocked down by a Lugo defender. Referee Guzmán Mansilla awarded the penalty and Lozano made no mistake (2-0). Far from being satisfied with the result, Villarreal B continued to push forward and in a counter attack launched by Lozano, Collado made it 3-0 with a shot that went in at the far post.

In the 78th minute, Idrissa picked up a bad clearance from the defence and played it to the far post for Ramos to get a consolation for the Galicians. Shortly afterwards, Ramos himself was sent off for a double booking after an elbow on Dela. Villarreal B could have done more damage, but they failed to convert the chances they had and the final score remained unchanged.

Next up for Villarreal B is a trip to La Rosaleda to face Málaga on Saturday 24th September at 6:30pm CEST.
