Gerard Moreno has two goals and an assist in his last two games and now has 12 goals this season

Gerard Moreno is going through a sweet spot. The Catalan striker has two goals and an assist in his last two games, where Villarreal got a draw against Real Valladolid (1-1), and a win against Levante UD (2-1). “We’re doing things well. We need to continue pushing and improving to stay towards the top of the table. We’re ambitious, we want to finish as high as possible in the table, although we know that won’t be easy. Now we have two difficult away games, but we know if we do things as we should, we’ll have chances,” he said.

Gerard now has 12 goals in LaLiga (ten) and the Copa del Rey (two). In league competition, alongside Ángel (Getafe) and Roger (Levante), he’s the top Spanish goalscorer. “Hopefully I can break my total from previous seasons, but more important is that my goals help the team win. It’s not something I’m obsessed with, I’m very focused on the day to day, on the match to match, and we will see at the end of the season where I am numbers wise,” he added.

His connection with Paco Alcácer is bearing fruits. “Hopefully I can continue to help the team, not only with goals, but with everything else that the manager, the coaching staff and my team-mates ask. With Alcácer, I always have said that when there’s a striker like him, it’s easy to understand each other. He’s a top striker and we’re going to make the most of that,” he analysed.

Regarding the upcoming league tie Villarreal have against Atlético Madrid (Sunday, 9pm CET), Gerard has warned that getting three points will not be easy: “We’re going to the Wanda with the aim of getting a win. Evidently, we know the difficulty of the great opponent that we’ll be facing, they’re a team designed to fight for the league, although this year they’re not close to the top two. We know it won’t be very easy, but we’re going focused and hungry to win and get three points.”

Finally, the Catalan striker spoke about the fight to get into Europe: “LaLiga is very competitive, it’s very hard to win games. This matchday just gone, not many teams were able to win at home like we did, and that speaks about the difficulty of the tournament. If you want to be to be there, you’re going to have to be at a good level and get a lot of points during the season. As I said before, we’re going for this ambitious aim, but always knowing what we’ve got and who we are.”
