The Yellows’ stadium will experience a Champions League round of 16 tie 13 years later

Villarreal CF will face Juventus FC for the first time this Tuesday, at 9pm, in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16. The Estadio de la Cerámica, which has been waiting 13 years to host a knockout round of the top continental competition, is set to be the venue for a truly spectacular match.

Previously, Villarreal CF have played in the last 16 on two occasions, overcoming both ties against Rangers in 2005/06 (2-2 away and 1-1 at home) and Panathinaikos in 2008/09 (1-1 at home and 1-2 away).

‘Vecchia Signora’, European giants

Juventus FC are the most successful team in their country. They have won the Serie A 36 times and the Coppa Italia 14 times. They have also won the Champions League in 1984/85 and 1995/96.

Juventus are currently fourth in the Italian league with 47 points. They have qualified for the Round of 16 as top of Group H after winning five of their six Champions League group matches. They are also the reigning Coppa Italia champions.

In the current Champions League structure, Juventus have reached the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League for the 13th time this season (eight in a row), qualifying seven times and being eliminated five times. In the last two seasons, the Bianconeri have lost in the last 16 to Olympique Lyon in 2019/20 (1-0 away and 2-1 at home) and to Porto FC in 2020/21 (2-1 away and 3-2 at home).
