The Yellows beat Girona FC and are now in the final eight of this season’s Copa del Rey

Villarreal CF beat Girona FC (0-1) and Montilivi, booking their place in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals for the sixth time in their history. The Yellows, who are now among the eight best teams in this season’s cup competition, will find out their opponents in the next round this Friday at 1pm CET, when the draw takes place at the headquarters of  the Royal Spanish Football Federation (Real Federación Española de Fútbol).

The Yellows have now reached the Copa del Rey quarter-finals on six occasions.

The first time was in the 2001/02 season, when they lost to Athletic Cup in a two-legged knockout tie, which ended with two wins for the Basque side (0-2 and 1-0).

In the 2007/08 season, Villarreal lost to FC Barcelona in a competitive and even set of games, which ended with the Catalans just coming out on top (0-0 and 1-0). In the 2010/11 campaign, the Submarine reached the quarter-finals, facing Sevilla FC, who ended up knocking out the Yellows (3-3 and 3-0).

The best cup campaign for the Yellows came in the 2014/15 season, when Villarreal overcame Getafe CF (1-0, 0-1) in the quarter-finals, before coming up against FC Barcelona in the semi-finals.

The last time Villarreal reached the Copa del Rey quarter-finals was last season, when the team faced Mirandés at Anduva (4-2).
