Villarreal Women’s team were knocked out of the Copa de la Reina despite a great performance against strong Real Sociedad
Villarreal Women were eliminated from the Copa de la Reina after losing 1-2 to Real Sociedad in a hard fought match in which the Yellows stood up to one of the best teams in Spanish women’s football. The ‘groguet’ team competed with spirit and great attitude despite being two goals down on the scoreboard. Until the last minute they believed in the equaliser and put the ‘txuri-urdin’ team in trouble.
Real Sociedad took an early lead with a penalty converted by Eizagirre. The penalty was awarded for a handball by Olivia Oprea. After the visitors’ goal, Sara Monforte’s team began to step up their game and pushed Real Sociedad back.
However, despite the home side’s good form, before the half hour mark, the ‘txuri-urdin’ side scored their second goal of the game. Again through Eizagirre, who, after an individual action on the right wing, broke into the box and beat Pamela Tajonar with a low shot.
In the second half, the ‘groguet’ team tried to equalise, although the game slowed down from the first half. Belén could have pulled one back with a header that flew just wide of Lete’s goal.
Five minutes from full-time, Ainoa was brought down in the box and the referee awarded a penalty. Without hesitation, Sheila Guijarro sent the ball into the top corner. It was game on at the Mini Estadi. The Yellows were brave and looked for the second goal, but they could not find the equaliser.
