The Submarine will face the Catalan side for the third time in the Copa del Rey
Villarreal will face Girona FC this Tuesday in the Copa del Rey Round of 16 (Montilivi, 9pm CET). The Catalan side are a team that the Yellows are familiar with in the cup. The Yellows have faced them twice before in the knockout tournament. Last season, the two teams met in the Round of 32. The Submarine came out on top 0-3, with goals from Ramiro Funes Mori, Santi Cazorla and Samu Chukwueze.
The meeting before that of the two teams in the Copa del Rey was in the 2004/05. In that meeting, Girona came out winners in the Round of 64, with a 2-1 victory.

Girona FC have reached the last 16 of the Copa del Rey after winning three ties. The Catalan side beat Gimnastica Segoviana away from home in Round 1 (0-2), and CD Luego at home in Round 2 (2-1). In the last round, the Round of 32, Girona FC beat top-flight Cádiz CF 2-0 at Montilivi (2-0).
