Defeat in Buñol (2-1)
Defeat in Buñol (2-1)

Two early Levante UD goals sentenced Villarreal Women, who fought back and scored through Kayla McKenna

Villarreal Women, in need of points to get closer to the goal of survival, travelled to Buñol to face a powerful Levante UD, who, in turn, were desperate for points to get closer to the Champions League places. A goal from Kayla McKenna in the 80th minute gave the visitors hope of overturning the 2-0 deficit, but the chances were not converted and the game ended 2-1.

The Yellows were overwhelmed in the early stages of the game, specifically in the first quarter of an hour. It was the fifth minute when Alba Redondo, after a rebound, scored the first goal, despite appearing to be offside. Moments later, Paula Fernández added the second goal, taking advantage of a cross from the left flank (min. 13). The situation was getting very complicated for the Yellows, although the intention to keep fighting did not disappear. In fact, Claudia Iglesias had the clearest chance of the game with a powerful shot, only for the ball to crash against the post.

No sooner had the second half restarted than Claudia Iglesias tried again, but this time her shot went just over. The visitors had several chances to create danger in the box, but were unlucky not to find the net. Kayla McKenna was the one who was fortunate, once again, in the 80th minute. The Jamaican, with grit and belief, scored a goal that gave Villarreal hope (2-1). Ten minutes remained and the players dreamed of a comeback. So, with just under 3 minutes added on, Ainoa Campo headed a ball from a corner to try to equalise, but the ball crashed into the rival goalkeeper and ended up going out of play. And just like any dream, the dream of a comeback ended for the Yellows (2-1).

Villarreal Women’s next match, against Sporting Club de Huelva, will take place on Sunday 9th June, from 20.30 at the Mini Estadi at the José Manuel Llaneza Training Ground. A match in which the Submarine will be playing for everything to continue fighting for another season in Liga F.
