Villarreal draw against Granada after missing a penalty in added time

Villarreal drew against Granada at the Estadio de la Cerámica in a tight game. The Submarine were close to victory with a penalty kick late on, but Paco Alcácer was denied from 12 yards. The goals came from Rubén Peña and Moi Gómez, while the away side’s goals came from Roberto Soldado and Kenedy (2-2).

Unai Emery lined up with a few changes to his starting XI. The Villarreal head coach put Juan Foyth at right-back and Rubén Peña on the right wing. Gerard Moreno was a last-minute absentee due to discomfort in his left leg.

Granada went ahead after 20 minutes. Soldado got on the end of a long ball and his powerful right-footed effort was unstoppable for Sergio Asenjo (0-1).

The Yellows continued with their game plan, looking for the draw. Manu Trigueros went close with a header after a Raúl Albiol cross, but the ball went just wide.

The equaliser came in the 28th minute. It was a lovely piece of play by the Yellows, that end up at Peña’s feet. The No.20 made two nice turns before scoring a great goal (1-1).

There was controversy in the second half, when with 57 minutes on the closs, Moi Gómez crossed into the box, and the ball hit Domingos Duarte on the hand. A clear penalty. The referee decided it wasn’t. Incomprehensible.

There was son after another piece of play in the opposition box that did end in a peanlty for the Yellows. The referee didn’t see Alfonso Pedraza be brought down, but VAR did. Moi Gómez didn’t miss from the spot (2-1, m.65).

Granada drew level with a great goal. Kenedy beat two Villarreal players on the edge of the box, before a powerful left-footed effort that entered like a rocket into Sergio Asenjo’s goal (2-2, m.74).

Villarreal had the chance to win late on through a penalty in added time. Yeremy Pino was brought down in the box and Alcácer stepped up, but his powerful effort was saved well by Rui Silva. A shame.

Next up for Villarreal is an away trip to SD Huesca on Saturday (2pm CET).
