Unai Emery underlined his happiness at the team’s consistency in the start of the league season

Villarreal CF head coach Unai Emery spoke in front of the media after the Yellow Submarine’s win over Elche CF.

About the match

“Based on confidence, we must be demanding and find a regularity that we didn’t find last year. The first three away games were a big challenge to see how we responded and we did it at a very high level. Today we had another challenge. I’ve been here for two years and we hadn’t won the first home game. The team is being responsible and from that responsibility and discipline we are adding individual qualities, but all within a block that seeks to be regular. Today’s victory is very nice to start by winning the first game at home and to have the start of the league that we have. I liked the game for the whole 90 minutes, combining veteran players with young players which puts the team in that confidence of being able to play these games and win them based on being better with our play.”

Confidence

“I have seen continuity to the game that we are trying to find based on us feeling stronger. We have a great defensive and offensive positioning that allows us to be in control with and without the ball. On a collective level we have to work hard and be demanding to find consistency.”

The aims

“Watching Barcelona yesterday, Madrid, Atletico’s game yesterday… They are the main favourites to be in the top four. Sevilla have started with doubts, but they will bounce back and we have been seventh for two years. Our objectives are to improve on last season. From there we want to find consistency in the league and be able to do something good, feeling that every game is important. LaLiga is the main objective this year, but without giving up the Conference and the Copa del Rey.”

Everyone plays a role

“There are things that benefit the functioning of the group and they are the five changes. For the management of the effort and the role of the players. Changing someone at half-time is not a punishment, but a decision that can go from the tactical to the physical, as today with Jackson, who was playing with a card and is a player with a lot of momentum, but who can make one decision and leave the team with one less player. The players are aware that they can be key. We try to make the group aware of this and that everyone finds their brilliance within the collective. We have to create a team feeling based on everyone having their place.”
