Sara Monforte’s team suffered due to a slow start to the second half and a lack of finishing
Villarreal Women lost to Real Betis Women in a game in which the Yellows had the better chances, but paid the price for a slow start to the second half. The Andalusian side scored their goals thanks to Natalia (2) and Ángela Sosa.
Two direct rivals were facing each other to avoid the dangerous zone of the table. The tension was palpable from the first minute, and the Yellows began to dictate the pace of the game. Sara Monforte’s team, knowing what was at stake, fought for everything.
As a result of this intensity came the first chances. First, Estefa Lima fired into the side netting, while shortly afterwards a header from Sheila went narrowly wide after a great team play and a cross from Giménez from the left.
Villarreal Women managed to break the deadlock in the 38th minute, but Kanteh’s goal was disallowed for a close call for offside.
Just at the start of the second half, the Yellows were stunned. Babajide, who had just entered the field of play, broke down the left and crossed to the second post for Natalia to slot the ball into the net (0-1, m. 46).
Villarreal Women responded soon after, but again fortune turned their back on them. A headed corner kick ended up on the woodwork. As if that wasn’t enough, Betis Women made it 0-2 in the next minute. The goal again came from Natalia, who unleashed a tremendous shot from distance that flew into Elena de Toro’s net (50th minute).
The Yellows continued to try hard. Belén had a clear chance when she was left alone in front of Malena, but her shot went just wide of the post. Later it was Sheila’s turn, who even managed to dribble past the keeper before a defender took the ball away from her when the ball was already on target. So much for the lack of goalscoring.
Betis made it 3-0 through Ángela Sosa. The Betis ‘7’ received the ball at the edge of the area and unleashed a right-footed shot that flew into the top corner (81st minute).
