The ladies, led by Yuriko Saeki, lost in a nail-biting penalty shoot-out
The Villarreal CF Ladies First Team fell just short of getting their hands on the prestigious Trofeo Teresa Herrera after losing to RC Deportivo on penalties (4-3), drawing 2-2 in normal time.
The match did not get off to a good start for the Yellows, as Marieta scored an own goal after only two minutes of play. Despite the setback, the Yellows were not discouraged and went in search of the equaliser, which came after a quarter of an hour after a great play that was finished off by Colonques.
Before half time Deportivo took the lead once more (2-1), with a goal by Elvira, but in the second half Yuriko Saeki’s side equalised again, as Cami’s second assist of the game found the head of Núria in the box, who headed home to make it 2-2.
As the final whistle blew with 2-2 on the score board, the champions of the IV Trofeo Teresa Herrera had to be decided on penalties. It was the locals who were more clinical in the end and were crowned champions (4-3).
