Claudia Iglesias’ header gives Villarreal Women an important win
Villarreal Women knew that the match against Sporting Club de Huelva was not going to be easy. The 96 minutes, counting the added time, were very intense, with continuous battles to win the ball and generate something positive. A goal by Claudia Iglesias in the first half gave Villarreal Women three very important points.
The first half of the game was characterised by the intensity shown by both teams, who fought for every ball with the intention of getting something positive out of it. And it was Villarreal Women who won the battle, with their first chance coming in the 12th minute when Kayla McKenna led a counter attack, but Lucia Gomez was unable to get on the end of it. Shortly afterwards, in the 32nd minute, Claudia Iglesias latched onto Raquel Morcillo’s cross and headed the ball into the back of the net. In added time, Fatou Kanteh had another chance, but the ball flew over the top of the goal.
In the second half, the Yellows were forced to do some magnificent and intense defensive work as the home side showed greater intensity in attack. Villarreal Women found it harder to get forward, but they still had several chances that almost increased the lead. In fact, it was close to the 80′ mark when Kayla McKenna thought she had scored the second goal for the Yellows, but it was disallowed for offside.
Villarreal Women’s next match will be on Saturday 3rd February at 6:30pm CET against Real Betis at the Mini Estadi at the José Manuel Llaneza Training Ground.
