“They were better”

Unai Emery was frustrated with the lack of a clinical touch against a tough opponent in FC Barcelona

Villarreal head coach Unai Emery appeared before the media to analyse the Yellows’ 3-0 defeat at the Spotify Camp Nou. The Basque manager acknowledged that FC Barcelona were superior to the Yellows: “They deserved to win. They were better than us. Our chances were to play a more complete game than we did and deactivate Barça more.”

In the same vein, the Yellows coach lamented the fact that, after the first goal, the Submarine were unable to find a way through in a few minutes that were key to the outcome of the game: “After the goal, we needed a few things to happen. We made some mistakes that penalised us at that key moment. Then, in the second half, we wanted to get closer to them, but it wasn’t possible.”

Finally, Emery had some kind words in memory of José Manuel Llaneza: “It’s a very difficult day for us. We are very affected by the loss of José Manuel. We wanted to dedicate the victory to him here but it couldn’t be. He was emblematic of the Villarreal badge. He is person who leaves a lot to the world of football and who is very important to his friends and family.”
