The International Castalia-Castellón Trophy, a roaring success
The Olympic swimming pool in Castellón hosted the International Castalia-Castellón Trophy this weekend, co-organised by the Castellón Swimming Club (Club de Natación de Castellón). It was the first championship where places in the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo were up for grabs, and put the city of Castellón at the centre of swimming in Spain. In the tournament, the main stars were Mireia Belmonte and Hugo González, who reached pre-tournament expectations and sealed their place in the Tokyo Olympic Games. Two other standout names were África Zamorano and Nicolás García, who also qualified for the Olympics in the 200 metre backstroke. The Catalan swimmer finished the race in 2.09.35, reaching the minimum time by 81-hundredths of a second. García did in in a time of 1.57.16, beating the time by four-tenths of a second.
Provincial swimmers Lidón Muñoz and Ariadna Edo were unable to seal their place in the Tokyo Olympic Games in the International Castalia-Castellón Trophy this weekend, but will have more chances to do so.
