The Villarreal manager assures “we deserved to beat Barça and clearly so”

Villarreal CF manager, Marcelino García Toral, only had words of gratitude for his players, who left everything out there on the pitch to get a point against LaLiga leaders Barcelona (2-2) today. “It was an amazing match. We deserved to win and clearly so. What the players did counts for so much, as nine players played against Leverkusen last Thursday. We were better than Barça in general. We scored two goals and matched them in everything they did which is so difficult to do. I am extremely proud of this team. It’s difficult to compete any better than that”, he commented.

According to Marcelino the controversial calls from the officials had the main say in the match: “Barça play and then there’s a referee to make decisions. Sometimes we make mistakes and sometimes they do. In today’s match not everyone was on form on the pitch. Then it’s up to the journalists to make judgements and say what happened out there”.

The manager assured that the fight for fourth place will be fought to the end: “We’ve been competing at a high level for a long time. We have a small advantage, but it’s not decisive. Injuries will have the final say. If we have all the squad available we can last physically, but the end is going to be tough”.

To finish, Marcelino also wanted to thank the fans for getting behind the team and spoke directly to the Yellow supporters before these final league matches in El Madrigal: “I would always like to see a full stadium. To win our next three games in El Madrigal will put us very close to confirming the Champions League spot. I can’t ask any more of this team. They’ve gone above and beyond what I asked of them at the start of the season. We got a point and the fans played a huge part in that today. I hope they continue to help us win the next nine points left for us in El Madrigal. We are fighting against teams with great potential and we have to value this”.
