The Villarreal CF Ladies captain won the Mahou award for the best player over the first half of the season

Laura Cuesta is the winner of the Mahou Five Star Player award. The left back for the Ladies First Team was chosen by Villarreal CF fans as the best player over the first half of the 2016/17 season. Laura is also the captain of the Ladies team who are having a great season so far.

The experienced player was very grateful for this recognition as, like her, four of her Villarreal CF teammates were also nominated: “I couldn’t believe it because the votes were really close. It shows that women’s football is growing and the activity on Twitter, on the day that the five nominated players were announced, meant a lot to us”.

Laura Cuesta is a key player in Patri Traver’s side, who are currently in sixth place in Group VII of the Second Division. This season Laura Cuesta has played 901 of a possible 1170 minutes, having started 11 of the 13 matches played. “I play at left back and I would describe myself as a quick, intense player who is always encouraging her teammates”, she commented.

The way to vote for the Five Star Player is easy. Fans can vote via Twitter for who they think has been the best player in the first round of games, from the five nominated players selected by the club. To do so correctly, users have to tweet the name of their chosen player on the @futbolmahou account with the hashtag: ‘#Jugador5EstrellasCVF’.

Laura Cuesta analyzed the Villarreal CF Ladies First Team’s season so far: “We’re doing well, although at the start of the season we didn’t score many goals, but we didn’t let many in either. We’re in sixth place, eight points away from first and with the chance to improve on that”.

The player praised the support for women’s football: “We’re really happy. They’re promoting women’s football in many clubs and it’s important that they’re valuing us. We don’t play like the men, but we have other qualities and it’s really important that people follow women’s football so it can start growing and be more valued”. A well-deserved award!
