Marcelino has highlighted the valuable win in France and the team’s ability to overcome the tough moments of the match
Villarreal CF head coach Marcelino García Toral spoke to the media to analyse his side’s valuable European victory over Stade Rennais (2-3): “It was an epic victory. We had to overcome a lot of circumstances and two injuries. We shouldn’t have come to the end because we had chances to score the fourth”.
“When you play against a big rival, the games are tough. They started by dominating the game. We went for more and found the goal. The equaliser was avoidable, an action that doesn’t usually happen. That and the possible aggression against Baena made us competitive. In the second half we were good. We were quick and creative. All of that led us to have clear chances,” analysed Marcelino.
Although happy with the win, the Asturian coach stressed that we have to concede less defensively: “We have many virtues and also defects that we have to work on in order to be an increasingly competitive team. If you are very good up front, but you bleed at the back, you suffer. We had to score three goals to win, which is not always going to happen away from home.”
On the other hand, Marcelino highlighted the team’s attitude during the match: “We have stood up to all adversity, which means that the team is alive, that they want to change the dynamic”. In the same vein, he has valued the performance of his players since he took over: “In the last seven games we have only lost one, with opponents of more or less importance. The game we lost was, except for 10 minutes that can’t be repeated, the most complete.”
