Portuguese centre back, Ruben Semedo, was enthusiastic at his official presentation
Villarreal’s Portuguese defender, Ruben Semedo, was really excited at his official presentation as a new Submarine player. The event took place at the official shop in the Plaza Mayor in Vila-real and was led by Villarreal CF Vice President, José Manuel Llaneza.
Semedo highlighted that since his arrival to the team he has felt great: “I’m really excited to be at Villarreal and all I can say is that I’m going to give everything for this team. There’s a real family-feel to the club . I feel good at Villarreal, like I’m at home”
In terms of why he decided to sign for the Submarine, Semedo had a clear answer: “Villarreal is a great club. I really like how the team plays and that was key at the time when I made the decision to come to this team”.
Lastly, Semedo affirmed that the team should take it step by step to achieve big things this season: “We should take it point by point and from there we will see where we can get to”.
Ruben Alfonso Borges Semedo (4th April 1994, Amadora, Portugal) started his career in the youth categories of Sporting Clube de Portugal, for whom he made his debut in the top flight in 2013. In the 2014/15 campaign, Rubén went to play on loan at CF Reus Deportiu, and in the 15/16 season to Portuguese side Vitoria Setúbal. In January 2016, Sporting, plagued by injuries, brought him back to play for the green-and-whites. In the 16/17 season, he became one of the regulars in the back four, playing 31 matches for Sporting de Portugal (24 in the Portuguese league, 6 in the UEFA Champions League and 1 in the Portugal cup).
Rúben is a defender of great stature and physical strength (189cm), quick over short distances and very strong in the air and, occasionally, he can also play as a defensive centre midfielder. The player, from Cape Verde descent, has dual Portuguese and Cape Verdean nationality, but so far he has only competed for the Portugal national team up until U21 (8 games, 3 goals).
Llaneza: “If Semedo is happy, he will make us all happy on the pitch”
For his part, Villarreal CF Vice President, José Manuel Llaneza, wanted to welcome Ruben Semedo: “I hope that he feels at home here. The day I met him I told him I hope he is happy here because that will mean he makes all the fans happy”.
