Villarreal CF and Vila-real Town Council have paid tribute to the heroes of the promotion to Segunda in 1970

A deserved commemoration for a magic moment. Villarreal CF, alongside the Vila-real Town Council, paid tribute at the Estadio de la Cerámica to the Yellows’ squad of 1970, which oversaw the club’s promotion to Segunda División for the first time in its history.

The promotion, which is now celebrating its 50th anniversary, took place against Bilbao Athletic (Athletic Club’s reserve side), in an exciting tie where the Yellows, after the tie was all square after two legs at El Madrigal and San Mamés (2-1 each game), were promoted in a legendary win at the Santiago Bernabéu thanks to goals from Luiche and Causanilles.

  • Presence of some of the 1970 squad

The following players were in attendance: Alapont, Luiche, Masià, Sanchis, Luis Moreno, Chumillas and Casalta, as well as family members or representatives of the players Linares, Enrique Martínez, Eusebio and Marzal, and of the legendary president Pascual Font de Mora.

  • Words of recognition

The ceremony saw words of admiration and recognition for the squad from president Fernando Roig, as well as from Vila-real mayor José Benlloch, Vila-real councillor for sports Javier Serralvo and goalkeeper Juan Antonio Alapont, who represented the squad.

  • Commemorative gifts for the squad

Villarreal handed the footballers and family members a personalised shirt with their name. The city council gave them an exclusive book of photos from the time, taken by fan Fernando Ferrer courtesy of his son Javier.

  • A historic video of the match

Those in attendance could also watch a historic video of the tie and the celebrations, taken from a documentary by Ricardo Agulleiro, with the rights to watch it generously lent by his son Ricardo.
