Villarreal CF will face Hajduk Split (Croatia) in the play-off round of the UEFA Europa Conference League. The Croatian team beat Vitória SC in the third qualifying round of the competition, with a 3-2 win on aggregate, thanks to their 3-1 win in the first leg, which meant they could afford a 1-0 loss in Portugal yesterday. Unai Emery’s side will play the first leg on Thursday 18th August at 8:45pm CEST at the Ciutat de València, while the second leg will be on Thursday 25th August at 9pm CEST at the Stadion Poljud in Split.

Hajduk Split, Croatian runners-up

The Croatian club, founded in 1911 by a group of students, are the opponents for the Submarine in the Conference League play-off round. They have 40 trophies to their name, including 18 Croatian league titles, 16 Croatian Cups and six Croatian Super Cups. Currently managed by Lithuanian Valdas Dambrauskas, they were runners-up in the Croatian league least season, finishing just four points behind Dinamo Zagreb.

Despite not having won a European tournament, Hajduk Split have played more than 150 matches in UEFA competitions, and, alongside Dinamo Zagreb, they are one of the Croatian teams to have played most in Europe, making their debut in the 1967/68 season in the Cup Winners’ Cup, where they were knocked out by Tottenham Hotspurs FC:

Hajduk Split play their home matches at the Stadion Poljud in Split, which has a capacity for 35,000 spectators. In the ranks of the club, which is celebrating its centenary this year, their standout players include Nikola Kalinić, Marko Livaja and Filip Krovinović.
