The midfielder from Castellón put on a show against Athletic Club in his 100th LaLiga match

He lit up San Mamés. Pablo Fornals was a key player in the Yellow Submarine’s victory against Athletic Club (0-3). The Yellow’s No.8 opened the scoring with a long-range strike out of nowhere and provided an assist for the third and final goal which sealed the victory in Bilbao.

It was a perfect evening for Fornals, who not only scored and provided an assist, but made his 100th LaLiga appearance (59 with Málaga CF and 41 with Villarreal CF), becoming the 20th footballer from the province of Castellón to reach this figure in the top flight of Spanish football.

The midfielder emphasised how the Yellow Submarine gave a complete performance at San Mamés: “We did a real job. We were good in defence. We made the right decisions both as a team and individually. The small details fell in our favour and we were able to get the victory.”

At San Mamés, Fornals scored his first goal of the season: “I saw that the goalkeeper was off his line and I didn’t think twice. First of all, I thought it was off target but it slowly corrected its trajectory and luckily, it went in,” explained the Yellows No.8.

Lastly Fornals underlined that the job was done not just by him, but by the whole team: “This isn’t a win for Pablo Fornals. It’s a win for Villarreal CF. We were solid at the back and we’ve shown that we’re a very solid team in defence that’s hard to beat.”
