Villarreal are looking for a win against Las Palmas to move away from the relegation zone

Villarreal CF take on UD Las Palmas at the Estadio de Gran Canaria this Saturday 13th January, kick-off at 2pm CET. The Yellows, recently eliminated from the Copa del Rey, now face two months of competition in which they can focus their full attention on their LALIGA commitments, as it won’t be until March when they return to the UEFA Europa League in the round of 16 of the competition.

The Submarine closed 2023 with an important victory over RC Celta (3-2) – an opponent to be taken into account right now in the lower part of the standings – but did not start 2024 in the best way after losing to Valencia at Mestalla (3-1). Next Saturday, Marcelino García Toral’s side will face the Canary Islanders, who are in tenth place with 25 points, six more than the Submarine.

The team coached by García Pimienta comes into the match in a similar situation to Villarreal. As well as starting the year in LALIGA with a defeat against FC Barcelona (1-2), they were knocked out in the Copa del Rey by CD Tenerife (2-0). Both teams will be looking for a positive boost this Saturday in the form of a win that will allow them to change the dynamic and continue to grow in LALIGA.

The statistics are in Villarreal’s favour if we look at the history of encounters between the Canaries and the Groguets. They have met eleven times in the Spanish top flight, with the Submarine winning six, drawing one and losing four.

While it is true that Las Palmas won the first meeting this seasom 1-2, the last time Villarreal visited the Estadio de Gran Canaria they managed to win 0-2 thanks to a Carlos Bacca goal and a penalty scored by Nicola Sansone in the 2017/18 season.
