The Yellows lost out in a match which could have gone either way

Villarreal Women were defeated by Sevilla FC at the Mini Estadi on Sunday afternoon. McKenna gave the Yellows the lead at the start of the second half, but Gabarro and Otermín, from the penalty spot, turned it around for the visitors.

The early stages of the match were marked by the equality between the two sides. In fact, we had to go past the midway point of the first half to see the first two chances of the game. On the one hand, the Yellows came close to taking the lead from a set-piece, but Cubedo failed to get his head to a Claudia Iglesias cross from the byline in the six-yard box. For their part, Sevilla’s best chance came from Gabarro, whose shot from the edge of the area was well saved by Carmen Carbonell.

These were the most notable chances for the two sides who, at the end of the first half, went in with a goalless draw.

And if nothing much happened in the first half… the opposite happened at the start of the second. Villarreal Women took the lead in the 49th minute thanks to Kayla McKenna’s header, her ninth goal in Liga F.

However, Gabarro equalised in the next move after a cross, and the game was level again.

Despite the goal against, Sara Monforte’s side continued to create danger. In the 62nd minute, Maria Llompart tried from distance with a long-range shot that forced Sullastres into a corner.

And 10 minutes later, Arantza Gallastegui, the referee in charge of the game, awarded a penalty for a handball by Ainoa in the box. Otermín, to the left of Carmen Carbonell, converted the penalty to put Sevilla ahead and give them the win.

Villarreal Women’s next game will take place on Saturday 27th April when, once again at the Mini Estadi, they host Granada CF in the match corresponding to Matchday 25 of the 2023/24 Liga F season.
