The Yellows boss believes the home side’s killer instinct was the difference in an equal game

Villarreal manager Javi Calleja appeared before the press to analyse the defeat against Atlético Madrid after the match: “It was a very even game. In the first half, they had more dominance, but it didn’t worry us. In the second half, we had more possession and we were the team with more control of the game. It was hard-fought. We knew how to compete away from home against one of the best teams in the world.”

The head coach underlined that the home side’s killer instinct tipped the balance of the tie in their favour: “It was a question of making the correct decisions. We came to try and get a positive result and you could see that. We played a good game, but we lacked clarity and we didn’t convince completely in both areas. On the other hand, Atlético were able to take their chances.”

Finally, Calleja underlined the importance of upcoming league matches: “We have to carry on in this way to get wins in the next few games. We have an intense schedule, with a lot of very important games against direct rivals so we can reach our aim of staying up.”
