The Villarreal coach admitted that the changes “helped us a lot”

Villarreal coach, Javi Calleja, was satisfied with the single-goal victory against Leganés. The manager emphasised that the substitutions that saw Pablo Fornals and Carlos Bacca enter the pitch were very important to the outcome of the clash, saying: “The changes helped us a lot. Carlos Bacca scored and Pablo Fornals was key. In the first part we came out very nervous, we weren’t passing well and all we could do was play it long. After half-time, the team changes and we’re leaving happy with the win.”

According to Callejo, the team is growing: “The psychological factor was key. In the first half, we were thinking more about the table than the game. In the second half we were freer and we were ourselves. Victories will always make your stronger. We have to stay humble and carry on working because we have a tough schedule ahead of us.”

The next challenge for Villarreal will be to face Rangers FC in the UEFA Europa League (Thursday, Estadio de la Cerámica). “There’s a long season ahead of us still and we have to trust in the work we’re doing. The performance of the team is quite good. Now we have to think in the next match. Rangers are a physically powerful team. Today’s match can help us with regards to Thursday’s game,” he concluded.
