Villarreal returned to the top flight of Spanish football in the 1998/99 season on 28th May 2000, only one year after relegation
Today, Monday 28th May, is 20 years since Villarreal CF’s second promotion to the top flight of Spanish football, returning there after only one year in the second tier. The Submarine was managed by Francisco Gómez ‘Paquito’, and the team was led by players such as Gica Craioveanu, Pascual Donat, Diego Cagna, Moisés, Javi Gracia and Igor Tasevski.
The promotion was confirmed on the penultimate matchday at the stadium previously known as El Madrigal with a 1-1 draw against Las Palmas – Jorge López’s 12th minute goal was cancelled out by a Tevenet leveller – was enough to see the Yellows return to the top tier of football in Spain.
