The Submarine have never faced Young Boys before in UEFA competition, but they have faced their compatriots from Zurich

Villarreal will face a new European rival tomorrow! The Submarine and BSC Young Boys had never previously faced each other in UEFA Competitions, and will tomorrow meet for the first time at 9pm CEST at the Wankdorf Stadium. However, both sides have already faced sides from the country of their opponent. In fact, Villarreal will be the fifth team who the side from Bern have faced from Spain.

Young Boys results against Spanish sides:

  • Young Boys 1-0 Real Madrid (First leg of first round of 1986 European Cup)
  • Real Madrid 5-0 Young Boys (Second leg of first round of 1986 European Cup))
  • Athletic Club 0-1 Young Boys (First leg of third qualifying round of the 2009 Europa League)
  • Young Boys 1-2 Athletic Club (Second leg of third qualifying round of the 2009 Europa League))
  • Young Boys 2-0 Getafe CF (Group stage of the 2010 Europa League)
  • Getafe CF 1-0 Young Boys (Group stage of the 2010 Europa League)
  • Young Boys 1-1 Valencia CF (Group stage of the 2018 Champions League)
  • Valencia CF 3-1 Young Boys (Group stage of the 2018 Champions League)

Villarreal results against Swiss sides:

  • Villarreal 4-1 FC Zurich (Group stage of the 2014 Europa League)
  • FC Zurich 3-2 Villarreal (Group stage of the 2014 Europa League)
  • Villarreal 2-1 FC Zurich (Group stage of the 2016 Europa League)
  • FC Zurich 1-1 Villarreal (Group stage of the 2016 Europa League)

However, the managers have previously faced each other. David Wagner, Young Boys manager, faced Unai Emery in 2018, when the Yellows head coach was Arsenal manager. The Swiss manager, then Huddersfield manager, lost 1-0 to the Londoners in the Premier League.

The Yellows arrive in Switzerland looking for three important points in the Champions League group stage against Wagner’s side, who beat Manchester United 2-1, before losing 1-0 to Atalanta. The defeat to the Italians is the only loss that Young Boys have suffered all season in 13 games (ten wins, two draws and a defeat).
