The Submarine beat Sporting de Gijón with two goals from Cédric Bakambu (2-0) to take them to 39 points

A dream first half of the season. Villarreal have equalled their best record for the first 19 league fixtures thanks to their 2-0 victory against Sporting de Gijón, both goals scored by Cédric Bakambu. The Submarine has gained 39 from a possible 57 points this season, the same as they achieved in the 2010/2011 campaign when, by this point, they had also won 12, drew 3 and lost 4 games, consequently setting them up for a fourth place league finish. The same position that the Yellows can boast currently, with 26 goals for and 16 against. Just amazing. Marcelino’s side have won 6 games in a row now.

The battle against Sporting de Gijón was intense and fast paced, but very much in the hands of the home side thanks to their clinical goalscorer Cédric Bakambu. For his first he made the most of a killer pass from Soldado and his second was a spectacular solo effort.

Villarreal were in control of the game until the final whistle, getting themselves three more golden points, invaluable in their pursuit to finish the campaign in one of the four Champions League spots.
