Villarreal CF’s team with intellectual disabilities will face Gimnàstic de Tarragona, Fundació Futbol Base Reus and Real Betis Balompie in the first phase of the tournament that will take part in Gran Canaria

The fourth edition of LaLiga Genuine is here! Villarreal CF’s team with intellectual disabilities (EDI) will once more take part in the most pioneering, integrative and socially responsible competition in the world. Organised by LaLiga, through its foundation, LaLiga Genuine will have 42 teams this season – four more than last time – and will take place in a total of five bases.

This weekend the first stage of the tournament will take place in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (2nd and 3rd April), which will then continue in Gijón (22nd, 23rd and 24th April). The second stage of the tournament will take place in Málaga (13th, 14th and 15th May) and Cádiz (20th, 21st and 22nd May). The final stage will take part at Athletic Club’s Training Ground (3rd, 4th, 5th June).

In this first stage, the Yellow Submarine in the ‘Deportividad’ (Sportsmanship) Group, will face Gimnàstic de Tarragona, Fundación Futbol Base Reus and Real Betis Balompie.

  • Gimnàstic de Tarragona vs Villarreal CF: Saturday 2nd April, 12:30pm CEST.
  • Villarreal CF vs Fundació Futbol Base Reus: Saturday 2nd April, 6:30pm CEST.
  • Real Betis vs Villarreal CF: Sunday 3rd April, 12pm CEST.

The squad for the first set stage of the competition is made up of the following players: Nerea Gil, Iván Mengual, Abraham Martínez, Sergio Rodríguez, Javier Ruiz, Juan Ramón Lara, Eduardo Hernández, Daniel Ortiz, Andrés Sanchez-Cid, Cristian García, Fernando Pinedo, Adrià Sánchez, Jessica Barquier, Marc Gómez, Francisco José Navarro and Marc Gimeno. The team is coached by Sonia Alcón, Natalia Miró, Ana Roig and Antonio Jiménez.

Competition rules

The competition an eight-a-side competition, with matches of four quarters, each of which last ten minutes. The 2021/22 season has been divided in three stages, taking part in five bases, with a total of 42 teams. LaLiga Genuine Santander does not only count sporting results, but also positive attitude showing gamesmanship during the games. The teams will also have a number of points that reward behaviour and fair play of the players, coaches and fans.

LaLiga Genuine is about sharing rather than competing.
