Goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo was overjoyed to renew his contract with the Submarine until 2022
Grateful and eager to keep demonstrating his potential. That sums Sergio Asenjo up, after his contract renewal until 2022 with Villarreal CF was made official today in a press conference led by club CEO, Fernando Roig Negueroles, at the Villarreal CF Training Ground (Ciudad Deportiva). The goalkeeper’s contract was originally up in 2019, but he has now signed to stay with the Yellow Submarine for three more seasons.
“I just want to thank the club for the offer. It was easy to come to an agreement. I’ve been here for a few years and the club has worked hard for me. I couldn’t be in a better place than here. I hope to keep improving and helping Villarreal to achieve its goals. From the day I arrived I knew that this was a serious club, that has a clear work ethic. Between us all we’re going to try to make Villarreal even greater”, he commented.
According to the goalkeeper, the agreement satisfies both parties: “Despite my injury the club has always had confidence in me. I’ve tried to show that they can count on me. This renewal shows that we are both satisfied. I try to do things well and respect this badge and this club. I always try to give my best to repay the confidence shown in me”.
Sergio Asenjo is currently the goalkeeper to have conceded the fewest goals in the LaLiga Santander with 10 conceded in 15 matches (0.67). “To be the least scored on goalkeeper is thanks to the work of the whole team. We are a really close group. The four defenders have played together for many years and this is the base of the success. We have been working for the same goals for a long time and this is reflected in the results. With the renewals, the club is assuring that this core of the team gets stronger and stronger”, he asserted.
With regard to the future, Asenjo has two wishes: “Villarreal deserves a title and we’re going to work for it. On the other hand, I hope to be a regular starter for the national team in the future, but it is very difficult to get a call-up for Spain”.

Villarreal CF CEO, Fernando Roig Negueroles, only had words of praise for Sergio Asenjo: “The club is really happy. He’s a great keeper, a great professional and a person that is an example of overcoming obstacles. He will finish his current contract at 32 years of age and we want him to continue until the end of his career”.
