Sergio Asenjo has conceded the fewest goals in the LaLiga Santander, just 7 in 11 matches

Sergio Asenjo has had a start to the season to remember. The goalkeeper from Palencia is the current leader for the LaLiga Santander ‘Zamora’ trophy, having let in just 7 goals in 11 matches and has also very recently been called up for Spain. He is on great form, just like his teammates. Not in vain, Villarreal have one of the most solid defences in the English, German, Italian and Spanish leagues. Only Tottenham and Bayern Munich (6) have let in less goals than the Submarine so far this season. Asenjo has kept 5 clean sheets in 11 matches (against Sevilla, Málaga, Espanyol, Celta and Real Betis). Unbeatable.

Sergio Asenjo is feeling happier by the day, and for good reason. His words reflected how good he’s feeling. “I’ve been extremely enthusiastic this season. I wanted to show Villarreal that I could come back as the same goalkeeper. It’s not easy to go what I went through and return to the top level. I think I’m finding my best form bit by bit and helping the team as much as I can”, he said after the Betis match. With regard to his Spain call-up, Asenjo added that “this call-up is the result of all the hard work I put in last season behind the scenes”.

In terms of the match against Betis, Asenjo was very satisfied: “We came off the back of two consecutive defeats, but in both matches we were in contention until the end. In this team we always pick ourselves up and brush ourselves off. We wanted to get back to winning ways. At the start of the match we weren’t comfortable, but after that we completely dominated”.

The Palencia native has let in 7 goals in 11 matches in LaLiga Santander (coefficient of 0.64), beating great keepers like Oblak (0.73), Ter Stegen (1), Diego López (1), Rulli (1.09), Sergio Rico (1.22), Pacheco (1.36), Riesgo (1.44), Kameni (1.46) and Lux (1.56). “The Vice President, Llaneza, told me as I entered the changing room amd I’m really pleased. I think that just says a lot about Villarreal. At this point in the season it’s not really important, but it speaks volumes about this team. I think if we keep defending to this level we can achieve our goals”, he concluded.
