Marcelino’s side arrive at this cup tie after a brief competitive break, caused by the postponement of their match against Levante UD due to the adverse weather conditions that affected the Valencian coastline.
Meanwhile, Racing drew 1-1 against Leganés in their most recent league fixture, a result that allowed them to remain top of the table. The Santander-based club are aiming to return to the top flight, a division they left in the same season that Villarreal suffered their second relegation to the second tier.
In the Copa del Rey, Racing have eliminated SD Logroñés (0-4) and SD Ponferradina (1-2), while Villarreal have progressed past Ciudad de Lucena (0-6) and CA Antoniano (1-1, 3-5 on penalties).
