The Submarine were unable to comeback from the 3-1 loss picked up in the first leg

Goodbye to the cup. After a draw against Real Sociedad at the Estadio de la Cerámica (1-1) the Yellows were knocked out of the competition. The Yellows needed to comeback from a 3-1 deficit suffered in the first leg, but they could not do it. It was an intense match that was marked, inevitably, by controversial refereeing. The referee disallowed a goal by Samu Castillejo for offside, which the replay shows was clearly onside, and it would have been the equalizer early on.

The Submarine started much sharper than the visitors, going in search of Real’s goal but not impatiently. The Yellows needed two goals to qualify, but there was still plenty of time left on the clock. Bruno came close to scoring after a great shot saved by Rulli, a brilliantly pulled back cross by Castillejo was left by Sansone for the captain to strike.

After a quarter of an hour Real Sociedad had not created any real danger, but they scored with their first clear chance. Oyarzabal struck a driven shot across the goal and into the far corner (0-1, m. 15).

The controversial play of the match came seconds later. Bruno played a great through ball to Castillejo, who slipped the ball past Rulli for an immediate equalizer, however the referee ruled the goal as offside. Everything seemed to be going against the Submarine, but Escribá’s side did not give up. Santos Borré, starting alongside Sansone up front, almost scored from wide out on the right, but his effort hit the front post.

Villarreal needed three goals to take the tie into extra time. They got the first just before half time. Sansone hit a fantastic free kick from the top of the box that bounced back off the post and Soriano, alert in the area, hit it into the wide open net.

The second half was dominated by the home side. Fran Escribá’s men controlled possession of the ball and went in search of the comeback in earnest, but it was not to be. Villarreal’s next league match will be this Saturday against Deportivo de la Coruña at the Riazor stadium (8:45pm CET).
