Villarreal CF and Marcelino García Toral have reached an agreement for the Asturian to be the Submarine’s head coach until 2026, in other words for the rest of this season and two more. Marcelino will lead his first training sessions this Tuesday at 10.30am CET and then at 6pm CET at the José Manuel Llaneza Training Ground.

The presentation press conference will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, at 1:30pm CET at the Estadio de la Cerámica press room in an event open exclusively to the media.

An exciting return

This will be Marcelino García Toral’s second spell in charge of the yellow first team, a position he held from January 2013 until August 2016.

Marcelino, who hails from Gijón, took the reins of a team languishing in the Spanish second division and not only achieved direct promotion that same year, but in his remaining three seasons in charge of the club he managed to qualify for two consecutive European competitions, reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League and the Copa del Rey and even qualified the Submarine for the UEFA Champions League play-offs after reaching fourth place in the LALIGA in his last season as coach of the Submarine. In total, Marcelino was in charge of Villarreal for 177 games.

Throughout his professional career, Marcelino has managed teams such as CD Lealtad, Sporting de Gijón B, Sporting de Gijón, Recreativo de Huelva, Racing Santander, Real Zaragoza, Sevilla, Valencia, Athletic and Olympique de Marseille.

Marcelino García Toral will be accompanied by the following staff:

  • Rubén Uría: assistant head coach
  • Ismael Fernández: fitness coach
  • Sergio García: assistant fitness coach
  • Bruno Uría: analyst
  • Pablo Manzanet: analyst
