The Submarine drew in the first match of the Sela Cup in Newcastle against Nice (1-1). Ben Brereton put the Yellows ahead, but the French side equalised with a Sanson goal just after.
Villarreal started the game by dominating. José Luis Morales was the man who took centre stage with two clear chances, first after a Brereton assist, where he was unable to make proper contact, and the second, which was blocked by a defender. Trigueros also had a shot from the edge of the box.
After half-time, Setién looked to the bench, bringing on youth prospects Dani Tasende and Carlo Adriano. The Yellows went ahead early on, with Brereton scoring the rebound of a penalty he had missed. However, Nice drew level quickly through Sansón. With an hour gone, Requena made his first appearance for the first team, as did Rodri Alonso.
Villarreal will face Newcastle tomorrow at the same time end their participation in the Sela Cup.
