The Spain international goalkeeper will play for Villarreal during the 2022/23 season

Villarreal CF have reached an agreement with Pepe Reina, who will play for the Yellows for this season. The Spanish international goalkeeper has signed a contract with the Submarine until June 2023, and returns to the club after 17 seasons where he has played for a number of clubs across Europe.

The new goalkeeper, who has already undergone his medical, will complete his first training session under Unai Emery’s orders this Friday. He will be officially presented as a Villarreal player on Monday (1PM) in an event exclusively open to the press.

Experience between the sticks with a great past at Villarreal

José Manuel Reina Páez (Madrid, 31/08/1982) is a goalkeeper with an impressive record in European football. After joining Villarreal CF from FC Barcelona aged just 20, he then went on to represent top-level clubs such as Liverpool FC, SCC Napoli, FC Bayern, AC Milan, Aston Villa and SC Lazio.

Now he returns to Spain for his second spell with the Submarine, with whom he already played for during three seasons (2002/03, 2003/04 and 2004/05), playing 147 goals. He conceded just 154 goals, one of the best records in Villarreal CF history.

Throughout his career, Reina has played a total of 874 matches as a professional player. He has an impressive trophy haul. He has won the FIFA World Cup (2010), and two European Championships (2008 and 2012) with Spain; a UEFA Super Cup (2005), an FA Cup (2006), a Community Shield (2006) and a League Cup (2012) with Liverpool FC; a Coppa Italia (2014) with SCC Napoli; and a Bundesliga (2015) with FC Bayern. With Villarreal, he won the Intertoto Cup in 2003 and 2004.
