Villarreal unable to match the reigning Champions League holders as PSG put the game beyond reach early on
Villarreal suffered a 0-6 home defeat against Paris Saint-Germain. The reigning UEFA Champions League champions proved too strong for the Yellow Submarine and claimed all three points at La Cerámica. Luis Enrique’s side effectively settled the contest in the opening stages, scoring four goals during a devastating start.
To create a special European atmosphere, Villarreal CF distributed 20,000 yellow flags throughout the stadium. The home supporters responded magnificently, waving them while singing the club anthem before kick-off.
For the clash against the Parisian giants, Iñigo Pérez selected a starting line-up consisting of Gulácsi; Freeman, Mouriño, Renato Veiga, Carlos Romero; Carlos Maciá, Comesaña, Gueye; Pepe, Ayoze and Buchanan.
Villarreal unable to stop PSG’s explosive start
PSG made a devastating start to the match. Within little more than fifteen minutes, Luis Enrique’s side had established a 0-4 lead. Joao Neves opened the scoring in the ninth minute by converting a loose ball inside the penalty area following a corner kick. Soon after, Doué and Mayulu struck in the space of five minutes to make it 0-2 and 0-3.
Fabián completed the early punishment by scoring PSG’s fourth goal in the 16th minute. Villarreal were unable to respond as the visitors ruthlessly capitalised on the Yellows’ difficult opening spell.
From that point onwards, Villarreal managed to contain PSG more effectively, while the French side lowered the tempo before half-time.
Two more goals after the break
After the restart, Villarreal attempted to pull a goal back through a long-range effort from Cardona that drifted narrowly wide. PSG’s response was immediate, with Fabián adding his second goal of the evening. The Spanish midfielder latched onto a through ball, dribbled past Renato Veiga and calmly finished beyond Gulácsi.
Midway through the second half, Pape Gueye tested Safonov with a strike from distance, but the goalkeeper gathered comfortably. In the 78th minute, Bony benefited from a fortunate rebound to make it 0-6 and complete a difficult European night for the Yellow Submarine.
