Villarreal B produce a heroic display against Zamora but miss out on the promotion play-off final
Villarreal B fought tirelessly, showed immense character and overcame countless setbacks, but they will not be competing in the final of the promotion play-offs to Segunda División after a 2-0 defeat to Zamora. The Yellows played an entire half with ten men, endured a gruelling period of extra time and battled through a host of difficulties – injuries, VAR reviews and even the dismissal of their coach – but ultimately fell just short.
Despite the tie ending level on aggregate following Villarreal B’s 2-0 first-leg victory, the competition rules state that, in the event of an aggregate draw, the team that finished higher in the regular-season standings advances. That favoured Zamora, who finished third in their group, while the Yellow Submarine ended the campaign in fourth place.
With so much at stake, Zamora started aggressively, while Villarreal B looked more cautious than usual. After several threatening attacks, the hosts took the lead in the 22nd minute when Carlos Ramos’ free-kick found its way into the net, its flight deceiving everyone as it travelled through the area.
The situation became even more difficult in first-half stoppage time. Gaitán arrived late to a loose ball and raised his foot too high, catching an opponent. The referee showed a straight red card, leaving the Yellows down to ten men and the Málaga-born midfielder visibly devastated by the decision.
The second half followed a similar pattern, although Zamora’s clearest chances came in the opening minutes after the restart. The game then settled into a more controlled rhythm, with the hosts trying to build attacks while Villarreal B defended resolutely and showed very few signs of vulnerability.
The Yellows completely shifted their focus, tightening up at the back and producing a tremendous defensive effort. Just when a place in the final seemed within touching distance, heartbreak arrived in the 96th minute.
Following a corner kick, Zamora requested a review and the referee awarded a controversial penalty for a challenge by Budesca on Loren. Carlos Ramos stepped up and converted to make it 2-0.
That goal levelled the tie on aggregate and handed the advantage to Zamora, who would progress due to their higher regular-season finish.
Exhausted and a man down, Villarreal B continued to battle throughout extra time, but the score remained unchanged. After the 2-0 victory in the first leg and the 2-0 defeat in the second, the aggregate score was level, and the tie-break rule ultimately sent Zamora through.
