The Submarine get a draw against Feyenoord in an even match
Villarreal drew against Feyenoord (1-1) in their fourth pre-season preparatory friendly. The Yellows, in a match with few real chances and a lot of battling, went ahead through Étienne Capoue just before the break with a great volley from a Gerard Moreno pass, but the Dutch side fought back and drew level just after the break.
It was a first half of hard battling and few chances. With open play, both teams started a long struggle from the start for control of the ball. The best chance for the home side came a few minutes after the kick-off with a tremendous free-kick from Paixao that Jorgensen somehow managed to keep out with a miraculous save.
However, it was the Yellows who ended up taking the lead when, three minutes before half-time, Gerard placed a magical pass from the right for Capoue, who volleyed spectacularly past the keeper to put Villarreal ahead.
After the break, Feyenoord came out all guns blazing and, in the 52nd minute, levelled the score with a Jahanbakhsh goal from the penalty spot. The home side continued to press forward in search of an advantage, but the Submarine recovered and began to challenge the Dutch side for the lead again. The match also saw Alexander Sørloth and Mattias Gabbia, the two most recent signings for the Yellows, play their first minutes in a Villarrelal shirt.
In the 85th minute came the clearest chance for the away side. Morales was left alone in front of the keeper after Ilias Akhomach’s recovery but Wellenreuther at full stretch keep out the winger’s shot.
In the end, it was all square for Setién’s men, whoo will face Sporting Clube de Portugal on Sunday 30th July in Lisbon.
