Ramon Terrats and Denis Suárez scored the goals for Villarreal who were impressive in the first half
The Submarine held Borussia Dortmund to a 2-2 draw in their penultimate pre-season game at the Cashpoint Arena in Austria on Tuesday evening. Ramon Terrats and Denis Suarez scored the goals for a Villarreal side that played at a high level in the first half.
Villarreal got off to a good start. Yeremy Pino had the first big chance of the game in the third minute, when after a great individual move inside the box, he beat Kobel with a dipping shot that was only kept out by the post, in what looked to be the first goal of the game.
Borussia Dortmund reacted to the good start and the match looked evenly balanced. Diego Conde made some great saves to prevent the equaliser, including a great save from Bensenbaini’s header from a free-kick from the edge of the box in the 25th minute.
Marcelino’s men, true to their style, were pressing the German team’s ball out of the box. And so came the first goal of the match. Ramon Terrats, very attentive, took advantage of an error from one of Borussia Dortmund’s centre-backs to get one-on-one with the home keeper, and with a great little dink he made it 0-1 in the 30th minute.
Villarreal also dominated the second quarter of the match. Danjuma, with a shot from inside the box that was saved by Kobel, and Denis Suárez, who made it 0-2 in the 48th minute with a great cross-shot after an offload from Comesaña inside the box, confirmed the dominance of the Submarine, who ended the first half ahead on the scoreboard.
During the third 30 minutes of the match, both Villarreal and Dortmund made a large number of changes in order to continue with the tests ahead of the start of their respective competitions. The Germans pulled one back with a powerful shot from Bynoe-Gittens from the edge of the area that Diego Conde could do nothing about.
Borussia Dortmund equalised in the last 30 minutes of the game. Sabitzer finished from within the six yard box to score the equaliser against a Villarreal team that, full of Yellows Academy players on the pitch, searched for the winning goal until the very end.
Villarreal CF will bring their pre-season campaign to an end on Saturday 10th August, when they take on Brighton & Hove Albion at 4pm CEST, the final warm-up game for Marcelino’s side before their LALIGA EA SPORTS 2024/25 debut against Atlético de Madrid on Monday 19th August at the Estadio de la Cerámica.
