Villarreal will play against the legendary Liverpool FC in the Semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League
The Europa League draw, conducted at midday today in Nyon, means Villarreal will have to go back to Liverpool to qualify, for the first time in club history, for the Final of the Europa League. The Submarine have already been to Liverpool in preseason, where they played against Everton FC (1-2). In that same tour of England last summer, Marcelino’s side also took on Wolfsburg (1-2), Olympique Lyonnais (0-2) and Derby County (1-1). And the Submarine went unbeaten.
Villarreal went back to its origins when they visited Liverpool, as the First Team squad made the most of a free afternoon to visit the city, getting to know its most well-known corners. In fact, a group of the players visited The Cavern Club, a music club known worldwide for having hosted The Beatles’ first live shows and as a pilgrimage for rock fans.
The history of Villarreal CF is, curiously, linked to The Beatles. Not in vain, the name ‘Submarino Amarillo’ was born from The Beatles song ‘Yellow Submarine’ in 1966. In the 1967/68 season, the club was fighting for promotion to the Third Division again, an objective they would finally achieve in that campaign. In one part of the stadium, a young group of fans started to play this Beatles song on a battery powered record player. And they sang it with their own words: “Amarillo es el Villarreal / amarillo es / amarillo es” (“Villarreal are Yellow/ they are yellow / they are yellow”). From then on, Villarreal CF and The Beatles have been related in some way. It was, without a doubt, a song that left an impression on the club. Villarreal CF and Liverpool cross paths again.
