The head coach leaves Villarreal CF after nearly three seasons at the helm

Javi Calleja is no longer Villarreal CF head coach. The Yellows would like to thank him for his hard work, dedication and professionalism during his time as Yellows first-team manager and wish him the best of luck in his sporting career.

The manager from Madrid took charge of Villarreal CF in 131 official matches (57 wins, 30 draws and 44 defeats). This season, with him in charge of the team, the Yellows finished fifth in LaLiga and confirmed their place in next season’s UEFA Europa League.

Javi Calleja, a Villarreal man

Javi Calleja was formed as a coach in the Yellows’ youth setup, arriving at the club eight seasons ago to coach at U16 (cadete) level. In his time in the Yellows’ youth system, he won three División de Honor leagues with the U19s (Juvenil A), as well as a Copa de Campeones. Before moving to the first team in the 2017/18 season, he took charge of Villarreal B, with whom he was unbeaten.

In his first season as first-team manager, Calleja sealed qualification for the UEFA Europa League after finishing fifth and last season kept the side up in a complicated season. This season, after an exceptional end of the season, he returned the Yellows to European competition, finishing fifth once more.

As a professional footballer, Calleja played in the Villarreal CF first team in one of the most important eras of the club, reaching the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. What’s more, he played for CD Onda when they were Villarreal CF’s reserve side, as well as at Real Madrid C, RSC Alcalá, Málaga CF and CA Osasuna.

Good luck and thanks for everything Javi!
