Villarreal Women lose against Atlético Madrid (1-0) and are relegated to the Primera RFEF division
Villarreal Women made it to the last game of the season with one last attempt at staying in Liga F for another season, but the situation was not an easy one. The Yellows were up against an Atlético Madrid side who, at the same time, were playing for a place in the Champions League for next season. A win was a must if Granada CF won their match against SD Eibar; a draw was valid as long as Granada CF lost or drew; and it could even have been enough not to get any points if the Nazarí team lost their match or, at most, drew and the goal difference was not 2 or more in the overall goal average.
Villarreal Women took the field and gave everything from the first whistle, with the strength and conviction that they could stay up. However, the match didn’t swing in the Yellows’ favour and they were relegated to the Primera RFEF division after three consecutive years in the top flight.
In the first half, the Yellows had to withstand, with great defensive work, a continuous onslaught from the home side, with their best chances in the 37th and 45th minutes. In the second half, Fatou Kanteh had the best chance in the 56th minute after a counterattack by Kayla McKenna, but her shot sailed over the bar. It was Ajibade, in the 75th minute, who closed the game with the winning goal for Atlético de Madrid.
