“The team had a great second half of the season”

Marcelino congratulated his players for turning the season around and was frustrated with Sorloth’s injury

Villarreal CF head coach Marcelino García Toral spoke to the media after the 1-1 draw against CA Osasuna at El Sadar, which brings his side’s 2023/24 season to an end.

Here is what he had to say

Grateful to the team

“I must recognise the commitment and attitude of those who played today and who have not had so many minutes lately. The matches are not won by those who play the most, but also by those who play the least. We are very grateful for their collaboration and effort.”

The injury to Alexander Sorloth

“We are sad. We were really looking forward to him being the top scorer because he deserved it. He scored 23 goals, one less than the top scorer, without taking a single penalty. That he didn’t get the chance to play 90 minutes and that he got injured on the first kick is a shame. He doesn’t deserve it. He deserves the opposite, but sometimes football is fickle like that. However, he has to be satisfied with his performance and we are very happy with him for the work he has done throughout the season.”

Pleased with the second half of the season

“This second half of the season was very good. We lost the first game against Las Palmas and since then we have only lost two out of 18. One against Atlético de Madrid, which we could have won in a game at the end, and another in Vigo where we played a large part of the game with one less player. That’s why I’m very satisfied with the work the whole team has done during this second half of the season.”
