The head coach expressed his satisfaction with the team’s campaign and thanked the players for their commitment and ambition
Villarreal CF head coach Marcelino García Toral faced the media for the final time this season following the 4-2 win over Sevilla FC. During his press conference, HE not only analysed the match but also reflected on the season as a whole.
“We started the season with excitement and wins, and we’ve ended it even better, with a run of six consecutive victories. I’m very happy with what we’ve achieved,” said the Villarreal boss.
Looking back on the final matchday, Marcelino was proud to have signed off the campaign with a win for the fans: “It was important for us to put on a good performance today. We were fortunate to start the match well and we were clinical in front of goal. We scored four times and we wanted to end the season with a victory.”
The coach also reviewed what has been a superb campaign for his side: “It has been a great season. I couldn’t pick out just one moment. Of course, the match against FC Barcelona comes to mind, because it secured our place in the Champions League, but so do the wins over Betis and Girona, because of what they meant to the team emotionally. What matters most is that we knew how to overcome difficult moments.”
Marcelino’s side have ended the season as the highest-scoring Villarreal team in the club’s history in LaLiga, with 71 goals in 38 matches: “That is no small feat. It shows that we’ve been a positive, dynamic team with a lot of quality in attack. To also become the second team in the club’s history to reach this many points reflects just how good this season has been.”
Finally, the Villarreal boss looked ahead with optimism to the next campaign, which will include UEFA Champions League football: “We’ll need to build a strong team. I’m confident we’ll do that, because we already have one. We’ll have matches at the weekend and during the week. We must be prepared. The goal is to enjoy the competitions and to improve on what we’ve done this year.”
